7 COMMON AC PROBLEMS

Here in southern Utah, we’re fortunate to have access to the sun year-round and enjoy some of the warmest temperatures in the state. That makes it easy to enjoy days by the pool, but it also means that air conditioning is extra important in order to stay comfortable indoors.

If your air conditioner starts experiencing issues, temperatures can rise quickly, making for an unpleasant and inconvenient experience until it’s fixed. The good news is that many of the most common air conditioner problems can be resolved with quick and easy fixes. Some of them can even be handled on your own without the help of a professional HVAC technician.

1. YOUR AC IS NOT TURNING ON

One of the most common issues people have with their air conditioners is that they’re not turning on at all, which can be caused by a variety of issues. To try and fix the problem, check your circuit breaker and replace any blown fuses. If that doesn’t solve the problem, try adjusting your thermostat or replacing the batteries. If none of these steps work, it may be time to call in a professional.

2. YOUR AC IS NOT BLOWING COLD AIR

If your air conditioner is running but not blowing cold air, the problem may be with the refrigerant levels. A refrigerant leak can cause the unit to blow warm air instead of cold. If this is the case, you’ll need to have a professional come in and check the refrigerant levels and possibly recharge the system.

3. YOUR AC IS NOT COOLING YOUR ENTIRE HOME

If you’re finding that your air conditioner is only cooling certain areas of your house, it may be an indication of a problem with the air ducts in your home. Leaks in the ducts can cause the cool air to escape before it reaches certain rooms. You’ll need to have a professional inspect and seal any leaks in the ducts.

4. YOUR AC IS MAKING ODD NOISES

If your air conditioner is making strange noises, something could be wrong with the AC unit. Common causes of strange noises include a clogged air filter, a dirty condenser coil, or a malfunctioning fan. You may be able to resolve the issue yourself by cleaning or replacing your air filter, cleaning the condenser coils, and checking the fan for any damage.

5. YOUR AC IS LEAKING FLUID

If you notice fluid such as water or refrigerant leaking from your air conditioner, the problem may be with the condensate drain. A clogged drain can cause water to build up and leak out of the unit. Try to fix this by cleaning out the condensate drain.

6. YOUR AC IS NOT TURNING OFF

If your air conditioner is running all the time, it could actually be a result of an issue with the thermostat rather than the unit. A malfunctioning thermostat may be causing the unit to run even when it’s not needed due to problems with the device communicating with your air conditioner. To fix this, try adjusting the thermostat settings or replacing the batteries. If that doesn’t work, a professional may be needed.

7. YOUR AC SMELLS STRANGE

An unusual smell coming from your air conditioner can be caused by a variety of issues, commonly including things like mold growth, dirty filters, and pests. To fix this, you’ll need to clean or replace the air filter, check for mold growth and have it removed, and ensure that your unit is free from pests.
